After Ullanor – Episode 13: Nemesis Book 1
On today’s episode of After Ullanor, David and Greg tackle the first part of Nemesis, by James Swallow, the thirteenth book in the Horus Heresy series. Horus Heresy takes a Law and Order twist with police investigating a string of murders while each of the Clades of the Officio Assassinorum send their best in as an assassination strike force against the traitor Horus.
After Ullanor – Episode 12.1: A Thousand Sons, Book 2
On the latest After Ullanor, David and Greg bring you the conclusion of the twelfth in the Heresy, A Thousand Sons by Graham McNeill. This episode reviews Book Three, Prospero’s Lament. Also, David would like to apologize if the edit is imperfect. They recorded this at the end of May, and he thought he got it edited and submitted, but there was some sort of error and he somehow deleted it instead of submitting it. So he quick re-edited the show and got it to us now. Please enjoy the end A Thousand Sons and, as always, The Emperor Protects!
After Ullanor – Episode 12.1: A Thousand Sons, Book 2
On the latest After Ullanor, David and Greg continue to cover the 12th novel in the Horus Heresy series, A Thousand Sons by Graham McNeill. This episode reviews Book Two, Mutatis Mutandis, picking up with Ahriman and Othere Wyrdmake learning each other’s skills, and continuing on to see Magnus’s dream of enlightening his brethren brought low by those he considered his friends at the Council of Nikea.
And as always, The Emperor Protects!

After Ullanor – Episode 11

After Ullanor – Episode 10.2
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 10.2:
So here we are with the final three stories from Tales of Heresy! Today we cover “Call of the Lion,” “The Last Church,” and “After Desh’ea.”
We are still having a great tome with these stories, and we hope you are too. Sorry about the sound quality for Greg. I cleaned it up as best I could, but sometimes Skype just doesn’t care how badly you want your show to sound good.
Also, thanks Kurt Metz for the new artwork for the show banner images.
Stay tuned for some cool info in the next couple of days! Super excited!
After Ullanor – Episode 10.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 10.1: Tales of Heresy Part Two.
So in part two we cover the third and fourth stories in “Tales of Heresy.”
First up, Scions of the Storm by Anthony Reynolds. We cover an interesting story and David gets to understand how the Word Bearers operated after being told to quicken their pace.
Second, is The Voice by Jim Swallow. A creepy little ghost story of a Heresy Tale that leads to more questions than answers.
Two more Tales covered makes it four down, the final three soon.
Enjoy!
After Ullanor – Episode 10
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 10: Tales of Heresy, Part 1.
We’re baaaaaack!
That’s right folks! Here we are and we are covering the tenth book in the Horus Heresy series, Tales of Heresy. This is a compilation of 7 short stories, and tonight we cover the first two with you.
After Ullanor – Episode 9.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 9.1: Mechanicum, Part 2.
Already? YES! The second half of Mechanicum! Greg and David finish up the book with some fun discussions. Let’s have your feedback on the forums for the follow-up episode before we get to “Tales of Heresy”
Enjoy!
After Ullanor – Episode 9
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 9: Mechanicum, Part 1.
So we’re back! I think you’ll have fun with this episode! We kinda cover the first half of Mechanicum, but we take a bunch of little side tracks. I think that’s kinda awesome though. We get into some really good conversations about character motivations and stuff. You’re going to have fun!
After Ullanor – Episode 8.2
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 8: Staring Into The Abyss.
So here we are after way too long. We visit the Abyss one last time. In a few weeks (gotta wait until I’m back from GenCon!) we will be posting an author interview. David is an unapologetic fanboy at the start, but shut up. You weren’t there. Anyway, we have some fun and get back behind the mic and Mechanicum is on its way!
After Ullanor – Episode 8.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 8: Battle for the Abyss Part 2.
So here is part two of Book 8 of The Horus Heresy, Battle for the Abyss, by Ben Counter. We cover chapters 12-21 and a bit quicker than we did the first 11. We have some fun with it and we hope you have fun listening.
After Ullanor – Episode 8
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 8: Battle for the Abyss Part 1.
So here is the long awaited coverage of Book 8 of The Horus Heresy, Battle for the Abyss, by Ben Coulter. It’s not exactly our favorite, but there’s a lot there that we had to discuss. So we got to chapter eleven! We will be back in a few weeks with the last ten chapters of the deep space chase that is Battle for the Abyss.
After Ullanor – Episode 7.2
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 7.2: Lingering on Legion.
So here is the feedback episode for Legion. We know…it’s been a while and this isn’t even a book. Cheer up, pumpkin, Battle for the Abyss is on its way! In the meantime, please join us for some Legion discussion
After Ullanor – Episode 7.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 7.1: Legion Part 2.
What can I say but welcome to part two of Legion by Dan Abnett. We pick up right where we left off and finish up book one (which is the first 3/4 of the book) and then roll through the exciting conclusion in book 2. It’s odd to split the book that way, and the last 100 pages has about the same number of chapters are the first 300, but it makes for an interesting ending.
I’m not certain what else to say about this episode other than this book might have two of the coolest “reveals” of any Heresy novel to date. Well, to about book 17 as that’s all I’ve read so far. But if there are cooler reveals than what the cabal reveals to Alpharius, or about Alpharius, don’t tell me. I want to be surprised, and since I won’t get to it for quite a while, you’ll only make me all antsy!
After Ullanor – Episode 7
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 7: Legion Part 1.
We are back and bring you the first part of Legion by Dan Abnett. Actually it’s not all of Part One. That’s 75% of the book. In this episode we bring you the first 10 chapters, which is about 1/2 the book.
As you will see, we try to answer some questions we have with the story, but actually we pretty much just wind up with more questions than answers. What can we say? It’s Alpha Legion. Did you actually expect answers? Silly person.
Anyway, what we DO get are some cool characters, some compelling intrigue, and fugging Strabo.
After Ullanor – Episode 6.2
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 6.2: Discussing the Descent.
So here is the listener feedback episode for Descent of Angels. Greg also fills us in about his recent holiday at the Hour Heresy Weekender!
I’m sorry about the sound quality on this one. It’s not exactly poor quality or anything, but it’s not to our usual standards and I hope it isn’t difficult for anyone to listen to.
After Ullanor – Episode 6.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 6.1: Descent of Angels, Books 3 and 4.
So here is the second 1/2 of Descent of Angels here for you! We keep going with all the themes and ideas about Zahariel, Nemiel, Luther and the Lion.
After Ullanor – Episode 6
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 6: Descent of Angels, Books 1 and 2.
So here is the first 1/2 of Descent of Angels here for you! Much like a spiral turning ever around on itself, we discuss the steadily repeated themes and symbols in this, the 6th book in the Horus Heresy series.
After Ullanor – Episode 5.2
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 5: Following Fulgrim.
So tonight we discuss listener feedback and forum discussions to start the show.
After that, we discuss power armor and its various iterations, as this is something I often find confusing. Besides, it’s soooo much easier to have Greg explain it to me than to take the initiative and spend time trying to look this stuff up myself. (And Greg answers my questions!)
So anyway, enjoy! We will see you in a few weeks with Descent of Angels.
After Ullanor – Episode 5.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 5: Fulgrim, parts 4&5.
So tonight we continue with Fulgrim (parts 4&5) by Graham McNeill.
We start off talking about the cover as we skipped that last time, but then jump right into part four. We had a great time discussing this book and we hope you all enjoyed it too. With so much plot to discuss, I personally hope we got deep enough into the characterization, metaphor and other literary devices. Let us know what you think! So anyway, enjoy! We will see you in a few weeks with the feedback episode.
After Ullanor – Episode 5
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 5: Fulgrim.
So tonight we look inside the sick and sad mind of Fulgrim (at least parts 1-3) by Graham McNeill.
We start off talking about the book in general, but then get right in with part one. The only problem is there are so many characters and so much going on in this book, we wound up taking longer to discuss things then we originally planned. So today we bring you the first 3 parts (15/25 chapters) of Fulgrim. A small disclaimer. My voice was a bit hoarse while recording, and after a while I was talking a bit slower and quieter. I hope this doesn’t ruin the overall show, as I totally didn’t mean to come across in parts sounding as if I had little or no energy. Maybe I don’t sound that way to you and I’m being too critical of myself, but I figure better to throw it out there beforehand so everyone knows…
So anyway, enjoy! We will see you in about a week or so with parts 4 and 5 of Fulgrim.
After Ullanor – Episode 4.1
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 4.1: Remembering the Eisenstein.
So on this listener feedback episode we have quite a bit of discussion of The Flight of the Eisenstein. We got more feedback on this episode than on our previous episodes. We aren’t certain if it’s because we have more listeners or because so many people like this installment in the Horus Heresy, but we are happy either way!
After some Eisenstein discussion, Greg talks about his recent experience at the Black Library Weekender. I’m not going to even try to hide that I’m jealous that this doesn’t “tour” like Games Day does. I’d LOVE to go to one of these. Anyway, after the main part of the show, Greg managed to get an interview with Laurie Goulding. Now, the sound quality is not of the caliber that would usually be required to make it onto the show, so fair warning. I have to admit that I had a hard time following the conversation myself. However, Greg got an interview from the Black Library Weekend and…well…we decided to put it up anyway. We figured, if it gets that bad, you can always skip to the end of the show. If you don’t think it’s that bad, then you have a pretty cool 16 minutes with Laurie Goulding!
After Ullanor – Episode 4
The re-posting of After Ullanor episodes on the Freebooter’s Network continues with Episode 4: Flight of the Eisenstein.
Tonight we dive into “The Flight of the Eisenstein” by James Swallow.
So here we go with the story of Captain Garro, one of the first of the Astartes to come to faith in the God-Emperor. We loved this one and we hope you do as well.
After Ullanor – Episode 3.1
This is a re-post of the original episode 3.1 of After Ullanor:
So this transmission begins with us chatting about some of the listener feedback, but it was surprisingly sparse this episode. Just a few points raised. Maybe it’s because Carl was on with us and a third voice really wound up hitting almost all the points. (Yay us!)
Because of that, Greg prepared something special for us. Seems the old boy has several contingency plans in order for listener feedback episodes without a lot of listener feedback. So what’s on the menu today then? Why, how to create a Space Marine! Now, Greg admits that he doesn’t have every bit of information on this and, well…I’ve got nothing, but I’ve got a lot of it! I for one found Greg’s little lesson quite interesting and I hope you do as well.
After Ullanor – Episode 3
The Freebooter’s Network is proud to announce that the long running After Ullanor podcast has become the latest member of the network. This is a re-post of the original episode three of After Ullanor:
So tonight we dive into “Galaxy in Flames” by Ben Counter. We welcome Carl from The Independent Characters Podcast again as he is more than generous with his time in this obscenely long episode.
We exhaustively cover this final installment of the initial Heresy Trilogy. We cover everything in the book as we did before, but as we reach the culmination of this part of the story, we get in to a bunch of discussions of themes and symbols that now become clear as they’ve occurred throughout the trilogy.
On a side note, future episodes will absolutely be as thorough, but as they are not parts of a trilogy, we hope to cover themes and symbols in more depth. Also, we know there’s been an obnoxiously long gap between transmissions, but the summer has been hectic and crazy to say the least. We are planning on keeping episodes more regular once school is back in session and our schedules get a bit more set.
After Ullanor – Episode 2.1
This is a re-post of the original episode 2.1 of After Ullanor:
Special Guest Co-Host: Carl Tuttle of “The Independent Characters” podcast [insert choir of angels here]
So here’s the first of our “listener feedback” episodes. A bunch of you have responded to “False Gods” with your thoughts and ideas about the book and we are bringing some of that back to the audience. We are kind of excited about this episode as this is where the show goes from just us talking about the book to you, to us talking about the book with you.
We know this first one is a little rough, but as the series continues and more and more of you all join in on the conversation, this is just going to get better!
After Ullanor – Episode 2
The Freebooter’s Network is proud to announce that the long running After Ullanor podcast has become the latest member of the network. This is a re-post of the original episode two of After Ullanor:
So tonight we dive into “False Gods” by Graham McNeill. We know these first few episodes are long, but this opening trilogy is so dense with characters and action that we couldn’t do it justice by skipping around when the entire heresy revolves around the events in this book.
After Ullanor – Episode 1
The Freebooter’s Network is proud to announce that the long running After Ullanor podcast has become the latest member of the network. This is a re-post of the original episode one of After Ullanor:
Well folks, here it is! Our long overdue discussion of the first book in the Horus Heresy Series, Horus Rising!
The format is a bit loose this time as we are still finding our groove, as it were, for pacing and coverage and whatnot. Anyway, we cover quite a bit, from the characters to the plot to the themes we saw reoccurring throughout the story. We hope you enjoy and we invite you to leave us feedback!

After Ullanor – Episode 0
The Freebooter’s Network is proud to announce that the long running After Ullanor podcast has become the latest member of the network. This is a re-post of the original first episode of After Ullanor:
Greg Dann came to me with an idea for covering the books of the Horus Heresy (which we both love) in an in depth style. This was a great idea and, and as usually happens with great ideas, it got shelved for about six months. Totally my fault. Just never found the time.
But here we are and here is our first episode! Now, I have when people number their things starting with zero because it isn’t really an episode number is it? It’s a place holder. But that’s kind of what this episode is. In this episode Greg and I talk about how the show came to be, and then cover the Warhammer 40K timeline up to the battle of Ullanor, which seems to be the place where the Heresy really begins…at least in the books.
So if your a fan of The Horus Heresy we invite you to listen and also to join in the discussion. If you’re “40K Curious” and you like the fluff behind your games, you may find yourself drawn in just as I did.
Anyway, please give a listen and let us know what you think.
Cheers!
